When remodeling a basement you have a few choices for basement flooring. You could install carpet, but carpet wears out eventually and can hold in that nasty basement oder! You could leave the floor concrete but that is just plain ugly!Tile is nice but is costly and difficult to install. Or you could install basement laminate flooring. Basement laminate flooring comes in many different colors and is very long lasting, easy to clean and will not trap moisture.

However when you install basement laminate flooring keep in mind that there is certain steps you need to take to ensure your floor is installed properly. The very first step you should take is to make sure the concrete is level, unleveled concrete will give your flooring low spots and an unattractive appearance. By filling any low spots you will have a smooth beautiful level laminate floor! After the floor is level you will need to lay down a vapor barrier for your basement laminate flooring. This is quite easy and the best material to use for the job is a 6-mil plastic sheeting. Tape this sheeting to the basement floor and overlap it six inches and tape the overlaps together. Cut the sheeting big enough to go up the wall about 2 inches behind the base trim. The vapor barrier is the most critical step when you install your basement laminate flooring and skipping it could mean a damaged floor in a short period of time.

The next step is actually installing your basement laminate flooring and completing the project. Before you install your new flooring make sure the the boxes of flooring are allowed to lay flat on the basement for at least 72 hours. This process allows the wood to adjust to the basements temperature and humidity. If you skip this step your floor may not lay right a few days after installing. If you decide that basement laminate flooring is what you want then take the time to prep the floor correctly. This will save time, frustration and money in the long run.

The tools needed to install wood laminate flooring are fairly common and inexpensive. The tools you must have are a hammer, a striking block, tape measure and a saw. A hand saw will work but a power saw works much better and will make installing wood laminate flooring much easier and gives a better looking finished product.

In many instances the wood laminate flooring can be installed over the existing sub floor or concrete floor. Never install laminate flooring over carpet or other textile based materials. The only other requirement for a laminate floor base is that it is clean and dry prior to installation

Before you install your floor be sure and let the boxes of flooring sit flat on the floor of the room you will be working in for two to three days to let the wood adjust tho the temperature and environment of the room. When you install your laminate floor you should start on the longest wall and run the flooring parallel with that wall. Spacers will be used to equally space your wood laminate flooring from the wall and ensure a straight installation. The spacers are normally 1/2" wide,. The spacers will give the floor proper clearance to float around and expand and contract with the temperature change. Although they leave a gap between the wall and the wood laminate flooring do not worry about it, the gap the spacers leave will be covered up by the base trim.

Being patient following the manufactures instructions and taking your time to get the first row of flooring to run straight will be the most time consuming step in the installation process. However once the initial rows are in the floor will install in record time and you will be on your way to a beautiful new floor.

When installing laminate flooring you will have to inspect the surface that it will be installed over and decide if it is an appropriate surface to install over or if you need to apply a laminate floor underlayment. While the laminate floor manufacturers say that their flooring product can be installed without any surface prep or additional work you must use common sense when evaluating you the surface you intend to install your flooring over.

When you install your laminate floor underlayment you will need to make absolutely sure that no nail heads are sticking up or that any adhesive was allowed to dry on the surface. These two situations will cause a severely uneven floor and high nail heads may even cause the floor to rise in spots. Many flooring contractor use screws to secure the laminate floor underlayment to avoid this potential problem. You must also make sure that after the install the new sub flooring is swept clean of all dirt and debris, dirt can actually make its way up onto the floor over time causing an annoying dust problem that may last a long time. When you install your underlayment try and make sure the largest joints will run opposite the laminate flooring joints, this will guarantee that there will be no laminate floor joints directly over a sub flooring joint. If this happens an uneven floor could result after settling and shifting occurs. After the final installation of the new sub floor it should be level with no low spots to affect the final look of the laminate floor installation.

Numerous material can be used as a laminate floor underlayment and the most common are thinner fiber boards and plywood. Thinner material works best on floors that just need to be leveled out and if holes need to be covered then But whatever material you choose make sure that the floor you will be installing over is flat and free from low spots or other damage and the material you choose was appropriate for the job.

Floor Framing:

Determine the type of floor framing that will be used. There are many different methods of floor framing and floor supports. Girders can range from dropped girders to inline girders constructed of standard sized lumber to microlam beams.

Microlam beams are recommended by most architects in either application. Floor framing can be conventional lumber, sizzor joists or I-joists. Consult structural engineer or state licensed architect on which floor framing is best suited for the structure. Install pt mudsill over block wall in two layers around the perimeter. Properly run bolts (5/8" all threads) through the mudsills.

Install proper washers and nuts and tighten down. Frame the floor system with the guidance of the approved building plans, structural engineer or state licensed architect. Once the floor system is framed then the floor sheathing needs to be installed. Subfloor adhesive needs applied to joists prior to sub floor installation.

The sub floor should be ¾" plywood or Advantek. Advantek is preferred after several application tests of the product. The sub floor needs to be installed the opposite direction than the floor joists or the 4' side of the sub floor needs to be installed parallel to the joists. The tongue and groove need to be married and locked. Checking squareness of the sheathing is imperative. Lines should be placed on floor joists to act as a guide but still checked periodically. The sub floor should be attached to the floor joists with sub floor adhesive, deck lock galvanized nails or decking screws.

Once the sub floor application and fastening is complete, cut all edges of the sub floor to the edge of the outer rim joist not extending past. This will ensure smooth sheathing of the walls and tie down to the perimeter of the floor system.

Shower floor pans are out of sight and not something you normally think about. But if you have a leaky shower, you may have damage to the entire area around your shower.

A handy person can replace or install a shower pan with the right instruction.

Here are the basic steps ;

Repair any damage

Usually damage will be to the sub floor in and around the shower pan. Remove rotted material and replace it.

Install drain base

Tile floors are water-resistant but not water-proof. Mortar that's exposed to water absorbs water. Mix the mortar properly or it will crumble and fail over time. Install the drain at this stage.

Build the sloped mortar base

Build your floor slope in here. The slope moves all the water to the drain which prevents mold, fungus and odors. Build a roughly two inch thick base that slopes to the drain.

Install the shower floor pan liner membrane and drain top

A flexible waterproof membrane goes above the mortar base. The membrane goes up the sides of the wall a few inches. One of the tricks is how to fold the liner in the corner.

Install the second mortar bed

A second mortar bed is installed over the liner and reinforced with wire.

Build the curb

Build any threshold forms and pour mortar mix to establish the correct shape.

Install tile

After the second coat of mortar cures, install a coat of thinset. Thinset is a special mortar used to stick the tile to the base. Then install tile. Let thinset cure and then grout.

Installing a floating floor starts by creating a level surface. This process may include sanding down the existing floor or removing the carpet. Next you will need to put down a vapor shield, if you are installing the floating floor over a cement sub floor, and by putting down the underlayment. After your underlayment has been taped down you will want to start installing your floating floor. To do this, simply snap the pieces together following the instructions that came with the floor planks.
